Project at a glance

Completed September 2026

Creation of a large swale, spanning three field parcels, picking up surface water flow paths, reducing flooding in Bledington.

Project status

Complete

After completing a Natural Flood Management Strategy for Bledington, it was highlighted that in high storm events water from the Westcote Brook spilled over into the Bledington Brook catchment. This has increased the pressure on the village brook and has contributed to flooding in the village.

This scheme is aiming to stop this flow between the brook catchments to try and reduce the flooding in the village.

Objectives

The ECP wanted to support the Bledington community, by reducing the amount of flow going through the village. This project increased the amount of water that could be stored across the farm by:

  • Excavating a swale across three field parcels, directing high storm flow water across a lower point in the Westcote catchment, away from the perched Westcote Brook.

Outcomes

3 field swale created

Increased water storage reducing flooding downstream in Bledington

Project highlights

Getting to work with new contractors who’s usual work consists of road building, and seeing them enjoy creating more natural forms that blend into the landscape.

Future plans

Continue to monitor the level of the Wetcote Brook to act as an early warning system for flooding in Bledington
