How can I volunteer?
Calling all citizen scientists!
Become a volunteer citizen scientist and collect vital data and evidence to help build a detailed picture of water quality and river health. Our citizen scientists can choose to get involved with:
- Riverfly surveying
- FreshWater Watch

FreshWater Watch
Every month, citizen scientists monitor the River Evenlode and its tributaries using the FreshWater Watch toolkit.
This toolkit includes a survey, alongside nutrient (nitrate and phosphate) and turbidity measurements. Results are uploaded to the FreshWater Watch platform, where data can be visualised and compared, providing important information for the ECP.

Riverfly Surveying
Riverflies, along with other invertebrates, are at the heart of the freshwater ecosystem and are a vital link in the aquatic food chain. They are not tolerant of water pollution and are commonly referred to as ‘the canary of our rivers.’ Monitoring them provides an excellent indicator of river health.

Catchment Champions
Catchment Champions are local volunteers who monitor river health at multiple locations in the catchment each month. They also play an important role in reporting pollution incidents on their stretch of river.
“I’m just one of many citizen scientists who are concerned with the health of the river.”
– John Pratt, Catchment Champion
The data collected by John and others has been crucial in pushing river pollution up the political agenda.
